Re: [RC] Bits - for those of you who love your horse, read. - Laney Humphrey

I haven't been following this thread much but do want to post my agreement with Angie about how different horses respond differently to bits/hacks/bitless. To me, it's partly conformation and temperament. But mostly its rider skill (light hands work well in anything, heavy hands don't!). But the forgotten part is dentistry. If your horse fusses with a bit in its mouth, have it looked at by a good, well trained equine dentist. If your only easy resource is your vet, ask if he/she has taken extra training in dentistry. If not, a trip to someone who has is well worth it!!!

Kaboot is a puller, and a lot to control, but the bitless bridle almost
sent him over backwards. He hated it and totally overeacted to any
pressure from it at all. His nose went straight up (not common for him
since he's got a very horizontal neck and tends to brace on a bit and
pull down and out). So, don't necessarilly assume taking the bit out of
the mouth makes it more mild. I also did not care for the fact that you
had to have the noseband very snug which I felt would hinder eating more
than a snaffle.

The only hint of leverage I was ever able to use with Kaboot was the
short shanked 4" flat nosed English Hack. To Kaboot, that was more severe
than the snaffle. To my friend's horse, the hack was the mild one and he
switched to his snaffle for more control. They may react differently.
