[RC] Sacroiliac joint - Rest? - Libby & Quentin Llop DVM

The question of rest is part of the difficult horsemanship challenge of
gradually increasing the load after injury. For many problems (eg. ankles,
tendons, sore muscles), I have employed Dr. Green (pasture rest).
Chiropractic problems, however, do not seem to resolve themselves; rather
they become a fixed part of the animals way of using his body.

For example, I just treated a 18 year old TB stallion that had been confined
to small paddocks and a stall due to extreme (aggressive) behavior for
years. His problem was a lack of mobility in the joint immediately behind
the skull that was extremely painful. Confinement and rest were ineffective
at treatment, altho the problem resolved with an osteopathic manipulation.

Thus IMO the chiropractic problems should be resolved before the off season,
rather than hoping that they fix themselves. That way, as the horses amble
about, there will be more chance that they will be using themselves more
symmetrically and fully.

Quentin
