Exactly.... there are times on a ride when you might want real "collection" as I explained.. getting the horse ready to go down a steep hill, crossing rugged terrain.
 
you are right in that what I'm asking of Ali is to be on the bit and rounded.

I don't think it is possible to ride a horse competitively in a collected frame. But you can certainly ride for miles with a horse softly on the bit and engaged.
