Re: [RC] Maybe shorter is better ;) - Truman Prevatt

When riding my mare (16 hands) I watched plenty people have to swim their horses across deeps holes in swampy rides. While I kept my feet dry on her neck, they were soaked waist down. On the other hand on one ride - a cold ride - I was getting very cold at the 95 mile mark so I says self get off and walk to warm up. Of course my keens were stiff by then and there wasn't a stump, log, ditch, etc. in site to get me a little advantage after I decided to get back on. I ended up walking the last five miles.

Moral - all other things being equal it comes down to preference.

Truman

PS: I'd rather walk than be soaked to the waist.

Our family just got a 14 hand Halfinger, and boy do I love riding him. He feels like a big horse when riding him, and I don't mind getting on and off either! He has a very big walk, but his trot is quite a bit slower than our 15 hand arab.
Today I was riding my 15 hand Arab "Shrimp" with a fellow boarder at Piedmont Stables (CA), and she was riding a 16.2 TB. When I told her how tall my horse Shrimp was, she said "Oh, so Shrimp's just a bit taller than a pony". I'm thinking... what?? For me, 5'3'', 15 hands is tall!
Perhaps that is just me, because I haven't been too exposed to horses who are 16 hands and over. What do you all think the AVERAGE height for endurance horses is? My guess would be 14.3.
Anyway, I think that I wouldn't mind an endurance horse under 15 hands next time. I know I'd get off and walk along side a lot more!
