[RC] Arabian "type" - Adam and Jannelle

Just a note on height in Arabians...the traditional bedouin Arabian horse
is about 14:2. Bedouins felt that if a horse was too tall (ie abt 15H), he
was not asil (pure). Now, this doesn't really factor into endurance
because whether or not a horse is purebred is not pertinant to their
ability to perform. But, in preservation breeding (those trying to
preserve horses with no known outside sources of blood, to put it simply),
you will rarely see particularly tall Arabian horses (over 15h) except
where people are breeding specifically for this and then, it's my personal
feeling, that sometimes other "parts" get out of whack and you might not
have as nicely put together horse as if you had stayed with the shorter
"version".

At my house, we have almost all Davenport Arabians and they are usually
between 14:0 and 14:2. Of course, it depends on if you measure them with
their shoes on or untrimmed or...:) I've come to the conclusion that
height doesn't really matter even for tall or big people (usually) as much
as how the horse is put together. And often short doesn't mean slight so
you can have quite a substantial build on a short horse that can carry a
larger person.

Personally, shorter horses mean that I don't have to be as flexible in
reaching the stirrup and it's just that much closer to the ground if one
comes off...which is nice since I don't bounce as well as I did when I was
15!
