When Lud and I went to Switzerland in 1985, we were guests at the home of a 
Swiss man to whom we had loaned a horse for Tevis (he finished!)  We learned 
a lot about the Swiss protection system.  1)  Every Swiss man from 16 - 60 
(I think those are the ages) has to take military training away from home 
three weeks a year.  (Probably follow-up to the original one-year training 
Heidi mentions.)  2)  Swiss military, armed and in uniform can be spotted 
waiting on street corners for the bus.  3)  On Sunday mornings, two 
prominent sounds are heard....church bells and rifle fire.  The Swiss are 
out doing their official target practicing.  4)  The Swiss have underground 
hangars for their fighter planes.
That's all I can think of at the moment, but since Switzerland is neutral, 
it takes great precautions to stay that way.
