I've been around horses most of my life. We used them on the ranch when 
I was a kid. I had a few years without them during my days in service to 
Her Magesty the Queen.  I've ridden over a lot of country and spend a 
lot of time on a horse. I know a lot of people that do the same. I don't 
know of anyone that has had a horse so injured they needed to be put 
down on the spot. I'm sure it can happen and has happened. However, the 
probability is not high. The risk of an accident with the gun, like a 
rider falling on the gun and seriously hurting himself/herself might be 
higher than a risk for an injury that needed a gun.
