We have a private and sheriff's gun range near one of our riding parks. Many of our horses got used to this over the years....one could always tie up and have lunch nearby, getting closer over time to get the horses used to it.... We also have tons of BLM land to ride on, one could also ride out for the day, tie up for lunch and do some target practice to get the horses used to it (and hopefully pick up all casings and trash). Target practice would be in safe area and not impact anyone.... One of our common dirt roads to condition on was for years was a popular spot for folks to go out and target practice. There were small canyons where they would set up... one was our trailer parking area!! Problem was the folks who tended to go out there to practice were also the types who would haul out trash to shoot up..leave it naturally, as well as their 12 packs of beer cans....also shoot down the road across blind corners, and shoot up road signs (our horse and rider sign has bullets through horse and rider, which meant they were shooting down the road)...so it took a lot of folks and veyr concerted effort to close the area down to shooting....
