Re: [RC] hills in Florida? - Sky Ranch

This argument is not about altitude or incline of hills, is it. It's about
SAND. Sand conditioning is a whole different ballgame, and if a horse isn't
used to deep sand, it's a big problem. If you don't condition in sand, your
horse can go lame really quickly trying to negotiate deep sand, especially
at speed.

And hey, if you want to train in sand *with altitude*, go west, don't go to
Florida.... There's plenty of great sand, and REAL hill climbing in New
Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, etc.

And forgive me, Jonni, but (as you know - LOL!) there are LOTS of hills in
Texas. And sand - for sand alone: Padre Island comes to mind, Galveston
Island comes to mind, and for some "hills" -- try the Guadalupe Mountains,
Chisos Mountains in Big Bend Nat'l Park, you're getting up to 7,000 to 8,000
plus feet elevation there.

There seems to be an ongoing fist fight about where the highest point
actually is. There is a point near Clearmont that claims to be 345 feet
and claims to be the peak. There is a point - Moundon Hill - which I
look at out my back door that some claim is the highest. Of course the
argument could be settled easily but it goes on.

However, it seems there is a bound between sea level and 100 meters.

No offense Jody, beter check your references again. Swamps are in the

Subtle is a good word <g>. I'm from Florida, and flat is also a good
word. This is a description of the lumpy part of the state:

In 1921, Edward W. Bok was spending the winter months in the
residential mountain lake community located adjacent to the highest
hill of Florida's Lake Wales Ridge, 298 feet above sea level. He
enjoyed taking evening walks to the top of "Iron Mountain," among
the virgin pines and sandhill scrub, to enjoy Florida's dramatic
sunsets and bird life. The idea came to him to preserve this hilltop
and create a bird sanctuary - a place of beauty, serenity and peace.
