Re: [RC] ergots - Barbara McCrary

Maybe someone knows something I don't, but I just cut them off to a reasonable length, about 1/4" or so. I've never had one bleed. I think they must be like the chestnuts...they don't seem to have any nerves in them, so they don't cause pain.

Subject: [RC] ergots

Hello All...

Anyone (vets??) out there.. I need help with an ergot problem.. I've discovered my new horse has huge ergots on his rear legs. They've got to be almost an inch from his body. They have splits in them almost all the way down to his skin.
Should I DO something???? Is this normal??? I'm afraid if he hits them they'll split his skin and bleed?????
I KNOW this is probably very ignorant of me...but I've never seen them this big on any of my horses, or seen them split like this?

Thanks for any help.
Charle in Louisiana
