Living in Texas, we don't have to wear long johns very often.  But 
when I do have to wear them, I usually wear only the long john and my 
jeans. I have found wearing the men's cotton briefs that are 
mid-thigh length also work.  It helps that my husband and I wear the 
same size long johns.
