[RC] water tanks and freezing - John and Sue Greenall

I can appreciate your story as several years ago I had two horses who
simply refused to drink from our tank with heaters in them even with
others doing so. being in Vermont, I had no choice but to use
something to keep the tanks from freezing. From Ridecamp came the
suggestion of using a submursable 1/5 hp circulating pump. Wow. Did
the trick and even the fussy horses drink. Seems that the deicers "leak"
some current into the water no matter how grounded and horses can
sense that. Since the heater is not on all of the time, horses will sense
when it is off and then drink. Not so good when it is minus 20 out! But
with the pump, the horses don't seem to notice. As with any electrical
device, I have a ground fault outlet and a copper wire running from the
tank to a ground post. Good luck!
