Lori,
Thanks for your original post on your experience. I appreciate your
honesty. I am so glad that you explained the time and conditioning it takes
for successful barefoot riding. For anyone that is considering this type of
hoof care management it is important to understand the time and commitment it
takes to make a successful change from steel shoes to riding with out steel
shoes. It doesn't mean it will work for everyone but to give it a fair shot you
have to be able to make a commitment. Riding 35-50 miles a week is certainly
outside the pasture potato realm in my book and it sounds like you have found
an equilibrium for keeping your horse barefoot and riding in endurance. Good
for you. Many endurance riders find an equilibrium to keep their endurance
horses active competitiors by picking and choosing how many or which rides to
attend whether it is because of advancing age, keeping weight on a horse, or
dealing with soft/boney tissue changes. I had considered trying to ride one of
my horses barefoot and realized I did not have the dedication and patience to
give this a fair chance. It doesn't mean that it was wrong it just means it
wouldn't work for me. I find it interesting to read about the success stories
and the not so successful stories with alternative management issues including
hoofcare. I am always open to learning something new. It seems the zealots from
both sides ruin it for everyone. I think I am just about to the point that I
am going to stop reading the "barefoot" posts.
