I'm not arguing that the HHHRMs can't work on every horse, however the folks that need to be reading this probably aren't. If there aren't enough volunteers, sometimes that is the person who gets the HHHRM and a crash course on how to turn it off and on. so we have folks with no clue trying to operate these things. (sometimes!) I need to replace my HRM and I would like to have one of the newer ones with the thin sensors, if some one selling these things was at a ride, and would try it on my mare to make sure that it will work, I'd gladly buy one, then I would know where to tell the P&R person to put it on her side.

If you can't teach them to use a HHHRM - try teaching them to use a stethoscope. Several years ago at a ride where I was "running" the pulse box, we had two new people that wanted to try the sport. They showed up to help. We were short on pulse takers so we give them a stethoscope. One was a nurse the other an MD so I though piece of cake - we are golden. The rush comes in and they are having problems - they are counting double pulse! Turns out the human heart sounds a lot different than the horse's heart and a someone with a good trained ear for the human will probably hear all chambers in action and double count.

We did get it straight pretty quickly once they got the drill. It's a lot easier to train someone to use a HHHRM than it is to teach them to use a stethoscope. Some folks that could be very helpful are marginal on hearing and really have trouble on some horses with a stethoscope. One or two people around with a stethoscope for problem horses usually does it. The way the pulse box is run in the SE - it doesn't matter since your time is recorded when you enter so if the HHHRM doesn't work, you won't lose time because someone else has to come over with a stethoscope and verify the pulse.

BTW you can by the electrodes separately - you don't need to replace the entire HRM. Roger would be more than happy to help you I a sure.
