All ride management 
should do is to authorize the use of hand helts or the stethoscope. 
Then, there is only one standard of measurment. No conflict. All 
pulses will be taken equally. 

Only if the same person uses the stethoscope on every horse. :-P 
Personally, the Hand held was a big help to me. Kaboot had a habit of
looking around and having his pulse react to everything he saw. If he
happened to be looking at a horse leaving camp when I took his pulse with
a stethoscope, it might be 80. I'd go back to sponging thinking he was
far from down. After we got the hand held and Bill started *keeping* it
on him we'd see him jump to 80, then look back at his hay and go back to
maybe 64. I was wasting a lot of time before we got the hand held.
