Where I ride in eastern Massachusetts, we share our trails for lots of uses, including mountain bikers.  Of all of the trail users in our area, they are the most polite.  They leap off their bikes and pull over to the side of the trail, even on an open, wide dirt road where it is unnecessary. 

 

Some of our trails are narrow, winding with blind corners.  Whenever I am coming up on a blind corner, I approach it at a walk and yell out, "horses".  That way someone on the other side knows what is coming.

 

As horrible as that accident was, we don't know both sides of the story.

The people in this shop are awesome--they carefully educate these cyclists
on exactly what to do when they come upon horses (pull over off the side of
the trail, smile and say hello!)

Because of this (plus lots of yield signs) we haven't had any bad accidents.
We run into at least several cyclists each time we ride, and (while we've
had a couple of "blind curve" close calls), we've had nothing but caring
courtesy from cyclists.

We actually appreciate the experience it gives our horses, in getting used
to them!
