RE: [RC] [RC] LD's - Juli Jakub

I have to agree with Carla here. I have never even rode an LD yet...but I do not consider it endurance. I will go to them because being a newbie on a newbie horse I need to use the LD as a training ride and I think they will be fun. But I will also use them to learn how to be in ridecamp, learn approximately how things work before I try longer distances. I am sure I will enjoy 25 milers and I, in no way, look down on people who do it, but I would not consider it endurance but more of a first step, a training ride, preparation for the next step of doing a longer ride or... a choice of discipline related but slightly different from endurance. My husband will probably never compete in anything but 25 milers because that is about how far he wants to go with the time he has to put into it. And I think that is great and I hope to be riding beside him at alot of them, but endurance to me is 50 or more miles. Just like in eventing....riding at the lower levels( baby through Prelim) is an accomplishment in itself, but it is a different beast from riding in an actual three day event. The training is a bit different and more intense for those higher levels....some people ride the lower levels to practice and get good enough to go higher and some people ride the lower levels because they like it and are having fun with no need to advance. I do not see a problem with either way and no one should look down on those that train to do their best no matter what level or distance. I advanced farther in eventing, most of my friends did not. I did not look down on them for that. I know what it takes to train a horse for even the novice level. One of the best riders in eventing I know never goes above training level. She enjoys and prefers to train young ones to the lower levels and then let someone else take them up higher...but I would not challenge her to a ride off just because I went "higher" level than her...she'd kick my butt! I am sure it is the same in distance riding. Just because LD's and endurance are related does not mean each is not a valid discipline all in itself...use it as a training ride or strive to do the best at that level...but have fun whichever way! But that is just an old eventer and a future LD and hopefully more's opinion!

If so, I'm NOT for it. LD's have their place, and I certainly don't look
down on the LDs or LD participants, but it's just not the same as doing 50
+ miles. And never will be. Just my opinion.
