Re: [RC] Gun Season - Chris Paus

This is one of the few times I feel blessed to live near a major metropolitan area! during deer gun season (which in Kansas is two weeks in Dec. and 2 more weeks in Jan), i can haul to several different parks within an hour's drive to ride where hunting is not allowed.

And my local state park where I do most of our training, we have 6 miles of "no hunting" trails, so we can get in 12 miles riding the trail and then doing it the opposite direction. I miss the rest of the trails during that time, but rather be safe than sorry. And even on the no hunting trails, I still wear some orange and put bells on the horse for the dufus who can't read the no hunting sign.

We sometimes put a jingle bell on the horse when riding in hunting season. Our trails are shared thorough a National Grasslands, with hunting, but we have not had much problems. We know the areas they prefer to hunt, and stay away, and start your rides late morning into afternoon. Oh, the bell is mostly so if we become parted with said horse, it can be heard in the woods, and hopefully not mistaken for a deer or really, really big turkey. I also wrapped my stirrups in bright pink or orange flagging ribbon. You can buy orange stirrups, but this works.

Many areas have many more problems, so bad many riders can NOT ride during hunting season
