RE: [RC] LD's an BC - Jim Holland

You know, this is a great ride award, and not just for LD. Vets really
identify with a rider who has properly trained their horse to stand quietly
for the vet check exam, trots out readily, lifts his feet with a touch, etc.
They ALSO appreciate a rider who presents his horse with no sand on his
belly and legs, clean feet, sweat rinsed off, and a light blanket if
appropriate.

I get funny looks sometimes when I show up in the vet check with just a neck
rope. Actually I could trot my guys with nothing, but wouldn't want to
"show up" the rest of you guys. <VBG> I actually got a completion once on a
marginal call on a miserable, wet, muddy ride when the vet said "He's a
great little guy, he's worked hard for you and I love the way you care for
him". I didn't know whether to hug the horse or the vet. :)

What we did on our ride this year is that a "TOP HORSE/RIDER" award was
given in the 25 LD. It was a collective effort between the vet's that day
on who they thought was a stand out horse in the limited distance ride. It
was not judged as a normal BC. In fact one of our vets said it was a toss
up between two junior riders for the award. The Horse and Rider that were
eventually selected where chosen because of the horsemanship and care that
the junior rider showed to his mount, apparently this stuck out to all the
vets and why he was chosen.

The Top Horse/Rider for the LD rides was the idea of our ride manager for
this year. I don't know if it will be done next year, but I thought it a
good idea.
