[RC] novice class, LD taken seriously etc. - Dream Weaver

Why does the AERC define endurance as 50+ miles?
I'm sure others will answer your question about how endurance is defined in the bylaws. However, there are reasons why longer distance rides are more physically challenging to a horse. Here is a copy of a research project published this year that indicates that changes occur in horses in endurance exercise: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=14669936&query_hl=16

"The ride length has a significant impact on blood serum amino acids mobilization and uptake; in the shorter race the increases stand only for mobilization, whereas in the longer the decrease can be considered the effect of the onset of the amino acids catabolism."

Another one: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=15059243&query_hl=29

"The Try/BCAA ratio decreased in 20- and 50-km races and increased in the others. These data confirm that long-distance exercise involves a mobilization of BCAA. The utilization of BCAA seems to be important in prolonged exercise: in the 72-km ride, we observed a decrease in BCAA blood serum levels, while a major role of Try was indicated by its increase, resulting in a rise of the Try/BCAA ratio."

Susan also says that the rider just needs to realize that what he/she is doing
is serious regardless what someone else thinks. The problem with this is that
AERC does not consider LD as legit. rides. The points are different, the miles
do not get included as "regular" miles, the times are not even included in EN
in ride results,etc.

The times are going to be included in EN. They are able to be viewed NOW thru the online database. Simply click on the ride results, then on each rider and you will see the ride time. There are regional and national awards for Limited Distance, with more being added next season. All miles ridden in AERC sanctioned rides of any distance are tracked and recorded.

Actually, by including LD rides in the point system the same as the other distances -- would likely completely wipe out any and all awards the LD riders get. That would be ironic wouldn't it. :) (be careful what you wish for)
