RE: [RC] Stanislaus River Rice - Mike Sherrill - Mike Sherrell

Pat,

Aren't we all?

Two possible starts:

Caswell Memorial State Park is at the south end of Austin Road, which runs
along the east edge of Manteca. The Park itself has a bunch of loop trails
that might add up to 10 miles at the most. You can ride east along the levee
from there for several miles if you're willing to ignore some no trespassing
signs -- you wouldn't be threatening any crops, although walnut growers get
very worried about hoofprints under their trees, which make holes walnuts
fall into that their machines can't pick up.

If you go this way, around Mohler Road you hit a fence that to get
around/through you really have to get off the horse and scramble. But you
can reach this point going the other direction thus:

Where Hwy 99 crosses the Stanislaus, in Ripon, if you can get off at the
last exit southbound on the north side of the Stanislaus and get to the east
side of the highway (this will put you at the NE quadrant of the cross
formed by N-S Hwy 99 and E-W Stanislaus), there is a little parking area and
a bicycle path that crosses a pedestrian/bicycle bridge that runs parallel
to the Hwy 99 bridge over the river. If you follow the bike path south from
the lot towards the bridge, just before the bridge a dirt path cuts off to
the right, under the highway. This path goes west for several miles,
including the oak forest pictured.

From 99 there is an east-bound continuation of this same path which only
runs for a mile or so before hitting the golf course. You have to be a
little determined even to get that far, although there is a park with
perfect turf footing you can cross.

From the AAA map, there seems to be several miles on the north side of the
river east of this golf course where no roads are indicated. That's why I
though maybe if it were raining or something and nobody was on the course,
it could be crossed and more riding gained. But if one were to trailer to a
point east of the golf course, it might be possible to gain access to this
hypothetical riding. If you ever try to check this out, please let me know
if you find anything.

Mike, where do you access the trail where you ride along the Stanislaus
River? I live in the foothills and am always looking for new places to ride.
