What would be some fast acting carbs for a horse? I know a Snickers bar is fast
acting for people, but what about the horse? Wheat bran and COB? And a little
beet pulp for some longer acting effects? How about carrots?

Linda>

Carrots might be good. Honey, maybe. Brown sugar. My people use Glycogen
Loader. The first 45 minutes immediately post ex is the critical time period.
GL starts bumping up blood glucose within 15 minutes of ingestion. Human
protocols often use subsequent doses (carb meals) two hours apart. COB would be
handy for these, if the horse is eating. Forget brans. Forget fat.

This is when the body is deciding if it has enough resources for recovery and
repair. If it decides it doesn't, then you flip into a cascade of catabolic
activity that lasts about 48 hours. Much of this catabolic activity destroys
useful tissue.

Fast acting carbs, dosed immediately after exercise, prevent this from taking
place and instead causes the release of Insulin-like Growth Factor (IGF 1), one
of the most powerful of anabolic chemicals.
