Re: [RC] black pads..color wavelengths - Susan, Princess of Pink

OMG Louise!!!  You make science so fun!  Now, for all of you who were in the Ft Stanton Caves when all lights were turned out:  DID our clothes have any colors?

I say they did since the fabric is dyed.

Another thing:  I teach blind and visually impaired students.  When I ask if an individual has light perception and the answer is "yes", I follow up with, "What color do you see?"  Interesting array of answers.  However, the totally blind student doesn't know the "color" he "sees" because he has no perception of color.  Do I understand, Louise, that individual would "see" black since there is no reflection of color?

Yikes, the science teacher has to jump in here.  Color is a wavelength.  Black is the ABSENCE of color and white is all colors.  The color that you see is the color reflected back, and it's opposite (think of your color wheel) is the main color (wavelength) absorbed.  For example a green plant predominantly absorbs  the RED wavelength, therefore it reflects back what it does not absorb, which is green.
White is reflecting all colors back and absorbing none.  Black absorbs all colors and reflects none.  This can be proved by using a prism.
So here's the question I ask my kids; do your clothes have a color if there is no light??
