I am not a vet--but my first hunch was it sounded like a poisioning.
Makes sense...BUT
....maybe something in the food, air ,etc.-- could there be a new fertilizer or something being used on feedstuffs over there? Pesticides? etc? I had a dog have similiar symptoms and vet thought she may have been poisioned.

only one horse in four different stables here...what about the other thirty? Each farm has its own feeding routine, not necessarily from the same place but all horses from the same farm are getting the same food.

The dark urine sounds similiar to what happens when a horse ties up...muscle cell breakdown, blue gums --lack of oxygen---red cell damgage? Anemia type symptoms....
Are other animals -- herbivores having anything like this? Or the carnivores????--

If it is a virus---what do they have in common--what could they all injest or share that is similiar???

Off the top of my head, I'm guessing mosquitos. It has cooled off here to a level that the mosquitos love and they are much more active. I know for sure that we have at least eight mosquito borne viruses that can affect horses, some of which I haven't been able to find out about online. Years ago a horse at the country club up the road got encephalitis and our visiting American vet was able to pull some strings at the US Naval Medical Research unit in Cairo to have blood pulled on a group of horses at the club and some surrounding farms. When we got the results we were flabbergasted. These horses had antibodies to things we'd never heard of and on the whole had never noticed anyone sick. Unfortunately NAMRU isn't so obliging these days, so I haven't found anyone here who can check for some of these things in humans, much less horses. But google equine viral disease and your head will spin. Some very interesting stuff is coexisting with us.
