I was thinking the same thing.  He sounds like a candidate for barefoot feet with boots for protection.  I have old macs and though they look huge, my horse quickly learned to keep them from brushing without interupting his stride.

If his feet are really good, could you forego shoes until he gets to a fitness level where he is doing more work - and hopefully has the weight and saddle fit issues under control also?
