Actually, stallions in herds are completely normal
members of the social structure.  I've owned two
stallions that I've kept in small herd situations year
'round (small herds b/c I don't have a ton of horses
here).  They eat, sleep, play, and hang around
side-by-side with the mares and foals.  :)
