my appy filly came with the name stormy and she was!!  i couldn't have that so changed her name to an native american word meaning wise.  it worked!!
normally when i have to name a horse i let them tell me their name.  i'll find myself calling them a name time and time again and then DUH..it'll dawn on me that's their name.
i had one come with the name wobe, looked up the name on the internet and it has two meanings.
one is an african tribe who make beautiful wooden masks and the other is a drug used to treat cancer!
no idea how the first owner came up with the name but he hasn't told me any different so wobe it is.
sometimes it's now wobedo.  i really think the best names are the ones they tell you strongly "this is my name."

In my opinion, they become their name, be it because you treat them that way or not.
