[RC] impaction--soaking hay - Dawn Simas

Hi Carol,

I ride a paint at 1100 lbs too, with Three Bars lineage (TB).  I don't know if you've ever had coughing issues with her (mine and his brother do and it's hereditary to the line).  But I solved it by soaking his hay.  100% of his meals are soaked first, not just on rides.  He LOVES this.  Like Ranelle, I fill a large 15g bucket and soak his flake of grass hay for several hours before feeding (usually start one soaking when I feed the one prior to it, like a rotation).  The added bonus to this is that he is so hydrated.  He loves the "tea" and will drink it too until the bucket is dry, 10gallons per feeding.  He pees much more often, but he's never *not* gotten straight A's in hydration, even if he never took a drink on the ride, even in summer.  Vet says there's no issue with "overhydration" and it's all good.  :)
