So someone comes into camp for lunch, knows the horse is lame and just packs up and
leaves. The vet can't give a pull because s(he) didn't see the horse and the only
code an RM can give is DQ. THAT's how a rider can abuse the codes. A lame horse
gets DQ. 

But how often does this actually happen?  I've maybe seen it once or
twice in the past couple of decades.

A ton of people that COMPLETE the ride pack up & leave that day!! Why would you expect anyone who is "done" by noon to stick around??

I don't like it at all; we stay the night regardless of when our ride ended that day [to volunteer, have some cold ones, whatever]. But it's a sad fact.
