I have just had this same discussion with Bruce.  All of the medical research on Glucosamine has shown not only better bioavailablility, but also that the sulfate donates a sulfur (NOT sulfa) atom to the protein in the joint fluid, which is a necessary ingredient inthe mix, and therefore works better.  I generally recommend specifically to my patients that they take the sulfate version and not the hydrochloride.
