Title: RE: [RC] Information from pulled horses

ED:

The succinct answer is:
6. They have been looked at and that is the reason for the present study of
horses behind and before pulls.  If this is the case I look forward to the
publication of the results in EN.

I personally review each Post Ride Statistical report that is sent in to the Office. No, there is not full compliance with the rule that they are to be filled out. That is another story. We do get a fair representation of the facts though.

I have done a bit of review and noticed interesting facts. There are very often compelling reasons that some riders keep entering horses that end up in multiple pulls. The most compelling reason is to reach a mileage or completion plateau. But I say that the horse does not give a damn about this and should be rested.

When the study is completed there will be an article written for the EN. In the past year there have been several reports in the EN on our several research programs. The concerned study was one of them. The researchers have been having some difficulty in the acquisition of data from rides and riders.

If you so desire I can send an attachment of reports regarding this particular project to you. They will be lengthy and require considerable down loading time though.

Subject: [RC] Information from pulled horses

I guess it is my Oldtimer's disease kicking up, while building an apple
storage box, I just remembered that there is a vet report required at each
ride.  The head vet is supposed to fill it out and give lots more
information about pulls than just L, M, RO etc.

Does anyone know what is done with these reports?  I don't remember any EN
articles about the results of analysis of vet reports.

I can think of a number of possibilities:

1. They are simply filed and then ignored, sort of what happend with horse
death reports before the reform.
2. They have been looked at, but there was not enough information in them to
be helpful without lots of boring statistical work.
3. They have been looked at, but nothing was there to be learned. If this is
the case why have they continued?  I haven't been an RM for a few years, so
they may have been dropped.
4. Many vets do not send them in, or if they do they are not properly done.
If this is the case, what is being done to improve quality?
5. They have been analyzed, important things were found, but someone decided
that only the vet or rules committee had a need to know.
6. They have been looked at and that is the reason for the present study of
horses behind and before pulls.  If this is the case I look forward to the
publication of the results in EN.
7. A lot has been learned and a  blockbuster report is being written and
will be published in EN during the next few months.
8.  Good publication has been made, I have just forgotten about it.  A
distinct possibility given my advancing Oldtimer's and CRS.
