 Linda--
You should inform your rheumatologist about this flare up of pain that
seems to be coming from the SI joints, as they are commonly affected
with ankylosing spondylitits. Your case must be mild if you haven't
lost much flexibility through the years. Touching your toes is not, in
my opinion, a sign that all is well with your back. It takes multiple
body parts functioning normally to do that safely. If, for example, your
hamstrings are short, you will have to strain your low back to complete
the rest of the movement to bend over and pick up a ten dollar bill off
the ground.
Ice and DMSO might help, but use dilute DMSO. It can burn your skin.
Does stretching by pulling your knees to your chest one at a time help
or hurt? Have you successfully had manipulation? Are you taking
glucosamine and/or chondroitin? Two-pointing may be more comfortable (or
less painful) than posting for now.   Bruce
