Re: [RC] [RC] Horsepool for the Alabama Yellowhammer ride? - REVISED - Mel Cochran

Hey, ya know that totally makes sense...if I was going on my own I would have to pay all of the gas anyway - Thinking about it that way, it might be more economical for me to just haul on my own. I have a diesel truck that is more fuel effecient and cheaper to fill up, plus I don't have a great big huge trailer to worry about hauling. I was more or less hoping for someone experienced to go with. I would pay more for the trip to be able to ride to camp with someone that can tell me a bit about what I have gotten myself into!

If there is someone who has some experience and would be willing to haul me and my horse I am game and would pay ALL fuel cost, and sign a waiver about damages to my horse or me...My horse is a good hauler - 22 years old and knows the ropes.

Thanks for the good advice!

Hi Mel,
A thought......I would offer to pay more than half gas (maybe 2/3rds)..here
are some things to consider.

The person with the rig:
1. is paying all maintenance costs on that rig including but not limited
to: oil changes (pricey), insurance, wheel bearings for truck and trailer,
alighment, tires (as many as 10 including truck and trailer), etc, etc.

2. They have all the responsibility for the hauling in terms of getting the
horses there safely; and all the actual
driving.

3. They are taking the risk of hauling a strange horse that might damage
their trailer.

4. More time involved for them to pick you up, drop you off, etc....make
room for your stuff....

Just paying half gas and suppiles is a pretty sweet deal for you. This came
up years ago in our riding group when one person ended up doing all the
hauling of friends becuase she had the biggest trailer. I felt the group of
friends should pay ALL her gas, since she picked everyone up and was the
first to leave home and the last to get home....; plus she had a lot of
extra wear and tear on the rig since she was loaded to the max. The good
trade off for her was that she got all the company and it really was fun to
travel together.....but it got old when people started grumbling that it
wasn't fair that she didn't have to pay any gas since she was going
anyway....

Well, one person didn't even HAVE a rig.....so couldn't have even gone; got
picked up at her front door....and was griping about paying 1/3 instead of
1/4 of the gas....sheesh!!!

Our situation now is better since everybody has rigs and we can trade
around....but heck, if somebody was going to pick me up and haul me and my
horse, and I only paid half gas....that would be a better deal for me! I
could save all the extra time, maintenance costs and everything on my own
rig!

Just a few thoughts to put in in perspective from the haulers point of
view...
