Re: [RC] build our sport - Susan, Princess of Pink

I have to respectfully disagree with vets spending less time with LD'ers.  It's usually the LD'ers who have the most questions.  It's been my experience that the vets have to spend more time with newbies' horses as well.  I say newbies...sometimes LD'ers and sometimes the ones who have just moved up into endurance.  The horses aren't always in trouble; many times the rider wants to be re-assured the horse is alright.  I'm not saying experienced endurance riders don't ask questions because they certainly do!  Perhaps they ask questions other than at rides or asked the questions earlier in their careers.

A vet is out the same amount of money one Saturday as he is the next Saturday.  If you had a 25 only (which currently you can't and it be AERC sanctioned), the vet would still have to spend most of Saturday at camp...just as (s)he would for a 50 mile ride.

The LD'ers would not be in the main for subsidizing the 100's.  If the LD and endurance entry fee were the same, they'd BOTH be subsidizing the 100's.

As a ride manager, I can state with certainty that a 25 mile ride costs just as much as a 50 mile ride.  I do whole heartedly agree that the LD ride is an introduction to many and they need TLC.

So...then basically the 25's are in the main subsidizing the 100's. Quite a concept - except for then people coming INTO the sport will be bearing the burden for the others. In truth, the 25 milers need less in terms of hay, carrots, volunteers, and even the time with the vets. While the difference is not huge anymore, the slight difference in cost does affect whether or not someone is willing to drive somewhere "just to take a greenie on a training ride'. So...have a 25 only one day and then next week have only a 50 - I bet the 50 costs more. Just a thought.
