[RC] RC: Charlie Barieau, Smokey & Gold country ER - Christy Hawes

The greatest pictures on my mom's walls are of her at endurance rides taken by Charlie. I remember him as a kid. My mom was very fond of him.

Smokey Killan mentored my mom and as a kid I used to follow him done the trail. For such a great horse, Bandit was the coarsest horse I'd ever seen, and a rough ride. How that horse racked up all those miles without breaking down is amazing.

My dad, George Hawes, was the first president of Gold County Endurance Riders in Auburn, Ca. How's that for history? Us kids would get sent to the basement to play while they held meetings in Secretary Diane's house upstairs. I suspect they did a lot more than just hold meetings- there was a lot of laughter - and I'm pretty sure the consumption of alcohol. Smokey lived next door.

Camping at endurance rides were great memories from my childhood. I think it was the only time my parents got along! My mom gave a lot of orders and dad just did what he was told. And my mom's horse was a nut case.

Charlie, was a quite shy man until you got him talking
about the OLd days as he would say, than he could
talk for ever of the most interresting AERC history. I spent
many a morning at Perko's in Auburn having coffee with Charlie
listening to his great story telling. We would have a great time
laughing and he would come alive as he told his tales. He was out
at our place for dinner on many occasions showing slides and sharing
so many great stories, some that may not dare be reapeated. Colorful
history indeed, Charlie is probebly not know to many now their loss as
men like Virl Norton,Smokey Killian and the like,Im not sure they exsist
today.I will be among the many who veiw it an honor to have know this
unique man.
