[RC] ok, reconsidering the cost of rides - Marlene Moss

I’ve been thinking about this some more.  I actually don’t have a huge problem with $80-85 for a 50 – especially hearing that some areas are even higher!  My bank account might have a problem with it, but I don’t have a conceptual problem because I do see the value in the close attention from vets and all of the work that goes into the ride and the overall experience.

I was more shocked learning that some LD rides were also $85.  I am working with several newbies that I want to bring to their first events which will be LD – because the horses are young, they’ve just started in the last month etc and I know that $85 will be surprising to them.  One person would have been choosing between a fun ride and LD and I suspect that she will have to do the fun ride as she is the owner of a non-profit org that is being forced to move and money is very tight.

But on the other hand, with all this discussion of so many people doing LD as a career, then it must be tougher on ride management if they are not getting as many 50 mile entries.  And maybe a proper response is to increase the LD fee to close or the same, so more people will think they might as well just ride the 50.  I know a couple of people that have already made that decision.  Hopefully of course everyone can make that decision based upon horses that are indeed ready for a 50!  But my point is that I’ve reconsidered my “shock” and don’t mean it as a complaint.

I was wondering if there is some forum to try to match up sponsors with rides that need more sponsors that could be set up.  Since my business is primarily saddle fitting, I’m pretty limited in area to donating services, but I am working on a couple products that would enable me to support some rides with products.  I’d be just as happy to do that for lower profile rides that haven’t found good sponsors for awards, so it could be kind of cool to have a site where people could offer stuff and ride managers could ask for stuff.  Steph, John – any merit to this that could be done on endurance.net??
