RE: [RC] Long rides and pee - Ranelle Rubin

One of the things I do with my horses in preparation for an endurance career
is to go on camping trips for several days (5 or 6). We do long training
rides on alternate days with short rides in between. We stop, feed them
carrots and small amounts of goodies during the long rides, simulating a vet
check. I am forever thankful to Sandy Rovane from whom I purchased my Doc
son, Fellow. She took him to several multi-day rides as a youngster where he
just "hung out". Not much phases this guy! He does get bored easily and
needs constant stimulation or he chews everything in sight though. I don't
tie him to friends horse trailers without something in front of him.

Maybe this horse needs to stay away from home a few days and learn to pee
without the stress of an endurance ride. My horses all like to get off the
trail and pee in the grass.

My 18 yo horse is now in the prime of his endurance riding career, but he is
being thwarted by his inability to pee away from home. This is fine for
rides up to 50km (30 miles) as his heart rate is still in the 40's and he
trots up sound. However, for longer rides he often struggles or even fails
to trot up (but not lamed out) because he really needs to pee, but can't.
I've tried various tricks including whistling, wet straw and even peeing
next to him, but he just won't pee until he's home.

I'd appreciate any advice or tips that I haven't tried yet.

Thanks.

Duncan Nisbet
