There's a lot of truth in what Mike says; however, there is something quite terrifying about being bitten by an animal.  One of our own dogs bit me one time; he had had distemper and I didn't know that's what it was.  I accidentally stepped on his toe and he lashed out and bit me on the leg.  I was terribly startled and frightened and started crying.  I wouldn't have done that if my horse stepped on my toe!

"Large preditors that are a real public safety threat": high cholesterol food makers, cigarette manufacturers, liquor industry, military-industrial complex, and so on down the line. If humans are threatened with extinction it's by our own hand, not by these last remnants of the wilderness.
