Re: [RC] question on hauling a single horse in a stock trailer w/ no divider - Dyane Smith

My horses, all lame, are at least becoming champion haulers going back and
forth to U.C. Davis, a 5-7 hour drive. I hang a bucket beside the hay bag
in front of each horse (like Barbara, I have a stock trailer). 2 of the 3
horses drink the bucket, sometimes several times over. A couple of weeks
ago, my champion eater-drinker, drank two full buckets, at half his hay bag,
pee'd and pooped like he was in a stall at home.

But, I have never had anyone drink when I offered it at a stop. So, maybe
the secret is, they want it when they want it. Otherwise, I don't know.

Dyane

We haul our horses in a stock trailer always. That's all we have. They
just walk in and we tie them to the side rails. They can't turn around or
dominate each other, but they can move their feet and bodies a bit and are
very comfortable. They routinely slant-load themselves. We have hay bags
in front of them, and when we stop, we offer a bucket of water (which they
never take.)

so how would you haul a single horse in a stock trailer that doesn't
have a divider? do you just use it as a box stall and let her pick her
position? this is not long distance hauling we're talking about.
probably no longer than 2 hours, at least for now.
thanks!
