Re: [RC] Oh, my...... - Diane Trefethen

I think Mr Donlan is an airheaded ivory tower type. "Rewilding", as he calls it, is the antithesis of evolutionary change. While he states that cheetahs, elephants and lions native to North America perished during the Pleistocene, he fails to mention that thousands of other species died out too. If you're going to slap Mother Nature across the face with such arrogance, you should at least make a stab at doing it right. Rewild with ALL the creatures that once lived here, not just two or three.
"[the big guys] would promote the natural processes that generate biodiversity."
How? By destroying the flora and fauna that newer North American citizens rely on
for sustenance?
"...perimeter fencing would limit the movements of the big mammals, ensuring that
they won't eat anyone's sheep or cows." Yeah right! We have enough trouble keeping
deer out of our gardens much less a hungry cheetah or a 4 TON elephant behind a
fence. Oh, and ask the Aussies how their rabbit fence is working. And their emu
fence and their dog fence,
And speaking of fencing, we could forget about endurance rides that traverse public and private lands. We would be barred from "protected" lands, for our own safety :( as well as that of the "big guys".
