Since Eric didn't see this and reply yet....I belive Russian Ridge is up in the Midpenninsula Regional Parks system up near Skyline Dr. (top of the Coast Range) in the San Francisco Bay Area (also roughtly west of Palo Alto).  Many acres protected in great park land, rugged terrain, sparsely populated up there, so typical and suitable Mt. Lion territory.  For those of you who know the Swanton Ride, this would be an area ranging south-east of Pescadero Creek Park (Old Haul Rd.).

In all my years growing up and riding in the penninsula hills, I caught a glimpse of a Mt. Lion just once....

Eric:

I hope you gave that horse A WHOLE CASE of carrots...what a good horse!

Tracey (thankful we don't have mountain lions in North Texas...at least I
don't think we do)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------
were out riding solo as usual and we were on one of the more remote trails
in the park

I will always trust Porter to take care of me out on the trail...We came
around a turn in Russian Ridge and there was high brush and rocks to the
left and he put on the brakes, Ears forward taking big sniff of the air,
then he started backing up. I couldn't see anything and nothing I could do
with my leg, voice or tap with a crop would make him move forward....then it
moved...we were 50 feet or so downwind of a Mountain lion...Porter backed
another 30 feet before he turned around and then we trotted off.... with me
watching our backside while Porter steered the ship.. .he got some nice
treats back at the trailer
