Re: [RC] Subject: Loafer Creek, not Ofer Creek - Karen Sullivan

Does anyone know if the inner pipe panel corrals were replaced or "fixed" in the last several years?  As I recall about the camp layout...there is a circular drive around the general camp. All the pens used to be on the outside of the loop. These pens were very nice and made of round pipe.  The next time I went, there were more sites (yea!), with newer pipe panels on the INSIDE of the loop.  These were "livestock" quality Powder River panels.  They were "U" shaped instead of round pipe.  Due to all the other pens being taken, I used these.  During the night my mare must have laid down and I remember these pens being a bit smaller than most camping pens...anyway, she got a hind heel slightly under the bottom rail, and you guessed it, got a horrible cut down into back of heel, below pastern and hoof...because the bottom rail is U shaped and open....it becomes SHARP when a horse struggles against it..

I told maintenance people, rangers, Horse Patrol folks and wrote a letter to park personnel just notifying that this happened and maybe they better stay with HORSE safe panels in the future.

As a reference point....most of the horse camps (remember I compiled a list?)...I have been to and camp at that did have the pipe corrals; had the round galvanized metal pipes (not livestock quality ones)

Anyone know the outcome of this?

I do think it is a very lovely facility, and has been steadily improved over the years; and yes, I l did also state profusely in the note how grateful we were for the camp AND the trails......but this, to me, is a hazard.....

There are 15 campsites. Two pens with
every site (2 horses per site) a round pen, horse wash rack, showers and
toilets.
