Re carb suplementation during competition: does it make a great deal of
difference what type of carb is used? simple, complex? I know folks that
supplement with syrup, brown sugar, some use maltodextrose. Do you think it
really make a great deal of difference?

In human sport they use some pretty active carbs, but usually a combination of
faster acting and slower acting sugars. We use a slower acting sugar so that we
don't get a spike followed by a crash--horses running by somebody holding up a
bottle of gatoraide won't grab it and slog it down every ten minutes. You have
to wait for a water stop to dose. so, you need a little calmer sugar under
those circumstances.
