Re: [RC] Pathophysiology of Scratches - rides2far

Really? Are you sure? How do you know it was the silicone? What
"chemical"?> I have used that stuff forever, got it all over me, my
horses feet
and> everything else.

Heck, I don't know they why, just the what. The first time it happened it
was Kathy Moyer's horse Merlin. The farrier squirted a bunch of silicone
up under the pad and duct taped the back to keep it in. A bubble squirted
out the top of it into the cleft of his heel. After it dried we peeled
the bubble off, then a day or so later he had what looked like scratches
there. Being the genius I am, I decided that the silicone had created an
anaerobic environment which had caused the problem. So, when I decided to
pad Kaboot for Dawson Forest the next year, as soon as the silicone
squirted up the back I wiped it off. He got a much larger case a few days
later. I still thought I'd just sealed in bacteria but mentioned it to my
next farrier and he said it was chemical burn. Whatever happened, it
happened. I now avoid getting silicone on their skin.

That said, Karen, I do remember Nina Warren saying she put bathroom
calking under splint boots to prevent rubs. I'm betting she used latex. I
know it was white because she said everyone just thought it was desitin.
