I sure agree with increasing distance before increasing speed.
 
Knowing that the distance can be "managed" is key in developing an endurance AND an endurance rider.
 
Once you both know you can, you can work towards increasing the speed.
 
Wow, Howard AND Tom Ivers in the same week...(though Ivers' input might've been just a bit more informative, though each could've done with less vituperation.)
