[RC] what to do with ol' lad - Ed Kilpatrickdang, kathy, with that attitude, i would hate to be your husband! :-) what are your plans for hubby when he turns 65?
but seriously, a while back on ride camp someone wrote about a mustang mare that was way old, 35, i think. this lady lets her grandchildren ride the horse. horses are like people. age is just a number. ol' lad is as old as he feels. from your description, he doesnt sound very old to me! a young man down here in the SE region was riding an arab gelding the same age as ol' lad, and finishing top ten in LDs.
a couple of years ago, i helped a friend of mine find a horse for her little girls to ride. they chose an older quarterhorse, a fleabitten gray. i rode him, he did great, let the little girls ride him, everything was fine. the guy she bought him from didnt have any papers, but said the horse was 17. well, i trailered him down to their place. the lady called me about 2 weeks later, said she made the guy take the horse back and refund her money. she said her neighbor saw the horse, said, dang, that looks like ole speck! turns out it was ole speck!
a retired barrel horse that had belonged to another family the next little town over from us. these folks sold him at auction, according to the neighbor, because he was old, and they didnt want to see him die on the farm. he had been their childrens' horse, and then their grandchildrens' horse. HE WAS 26! so, i asked the lady who bought him from the trader, so, whats the problem? she said, all the old SOB wants to do is RUN!!!
