Re: [RC] TWH/lope/gallop - Truman Prevatt

I used to ride this old palomino TWH - she was actually my mare's mother - and she was fast. I mean she was as fast as any TB I ever rode. She had been abused in her early life - probably because all she had was two speeds, fast and faster and when you got on her she was off to "head off the yankees at Shiloh". The good thing about here was she was literally spook proof.

She would also take off. One day I said you old bird we are going to fix that. Took her to a state park near me at the time with a very long two track dirt road under a power line that was part of the horse trail She took off and I rocked up in the irons - so to speak. After about a mile she had figured she had had her fun and started to slow. I said nope, I'm not finished and kicker her on with my legs and crop. We went about another 1/4 of a mile and she started to slow again. Again I said nope - and pushed her on. About a furlong later I asked her to slow down, rocked back into the saddle she came right back down. We stopped and walked, stopped at a stream to sponge her off get her a drink and let her unwind.

We walk on back in and go home. That was the last time that old bird pulled a runaway stunt on me. She was a blast to ride. I did a few LD's and her first 50 while her mother was in foal, and Kathy did about 250 miles of endurance on her before Stormy fell in a hole and hurt her shoulder. She did her first 50 at 16 and last at about 18. Some horse and could she fly! I just wish I had gotten her at 5 instead of 15. She would have made a great endurance horse.

Truman - who doesn't suggest this type of stunt for the faint of heart and if you do try it make sure you have adult supervision and your mileage might vary.
