Re: [RC] [RC] Why Gait...spoof - Soli Sorokin

I know this was a spoof, but I'm gonna answer seriously.

Actually, I get more rubs on inconvenient places from the gaited
horses than trotting ones. Found that out recently the hard way.
Remember, your butt may stay in the saddle, but it doesn't stay
completely still unless you're one of those that are bracing with your
feet and sitting the horse like it's a recliner (which, unfortunately,
is how 90% if the gaited horse riders ride). After some miles, you
start to notice it and worry about getting calluses in places the man
in your life might not want them! ;)

But the gait does save your knees.

Also, I tend to get hotter and sweatier in those
same...er...places....when I ride the gait vs trotting. When I post,
it allows for some air flow.... when I gait, it creates more surface
area friction which creates more heat.

I've been alternating between a TWH mare and my arab (with a teeth
jarring trot) on a daily basis and often will take them riding the
same day. It may only be a two rat study, but I find that there are
benefits and drawbacks to each type that pretty much equal out at the
end of the day. So, I gait, and I trot, sometimes on the same horse -
and all is good.

And for the record, a trot is just as natural to many of the gaited
horses as is their gait. Sure, we can choose to reinforce it or not
just like we do any other "natural" gait, but it's not something that
has to be taught to them from scratch (not sure that's even possible).

So you can ride in the tightest, least flattering spandex available and
still manage to get some rubs.

Ok, we have heard from the "Why trotters" out there. How about us on the
"other" foot or the other two beat feet.

WHY GAIT:
When you can have a super rough trotting horse that jars your guts out.
When you can have rub marks where those "other" guys are sitting on soft
seats.
When you can come flying into the vet check in a big tizzy, all strung out
and hot and botherd, verses "gliding" in on a velvet carpet to ease off the
horse.
When you can be in your horses biggest trot and STILL be passed by that
racking sucker.
When you can do like this weekend, go to a ride in the boiling heat and be
worked into a total sweat from posting.....while the others guys don't seem
to even get dirty.

Just a few thoughts from a die hard trotter.....who will some day get one of
those smooth rides when the knees are totally shot. :))

able to follow the Tevis online.

I have to agree with the cowboy here. On my old walker my second
favorite gait was the canter - the favorite being the gallop ;-) .
However, unlike Ed, the Paso gate would drive me crazy. It felt to me
like I had sit down on a vibrator. It was smooth but not what I wanted
to ride for a long way. On the other hand some guys perfer blonds, some
guys red heads and some will take 'em both.

oh, this is near and dear to my heart, and endurance related! the
name of my farm is whytrot farms. my slogan is, "why trot when you
can run wide open!" i ride trotting horses and i ride gaited
horses too. i have done endurance on both. my gaited horse of
choice is the paso fino. you can have that head bobbin stuff,
rackinfool, i dont like it. i have ridden that running walk, and i
will say it is smooth, but i sure dont think it is as smooth as a good
gaited paso fino. and their heads dont bob! i have ridden lots of
different breeds of gaited horses, TWH, racking horse, paso fino,
peruvian paso, mangalarga marchador, and colombian trote y galope.
my favorite is my paso fino gelding starbuck who has a wonderful,
natural fourbeat gait, but in addition to that, the little bugger can
RUN!! (which, by the way, is another natural gait!) cowboy ed
