Re: [RC] Trailer Configuration - ebeyrider

Straight, slant, stock - doesn't matter. What does matter:

-Rubber-torsion suspension (an old bargain trailer is no bargain to the horse).

-Horse's ability to lower head and clear nasal passages (which they cannot do
with manger-style trailers, and to add insult to injury, they put the hay under
their nose and the vents blow the dust into their face while traveling. The
internalized stress can cause shipping fever on longer hauls.

-Horse doesn't need much extra body space (large area to move around while
traveling just tires/stresses the legs). What they need is space in front of
their head to stretch their neck for balance.

-Horse needs head room above to aleviate their natural claustrafobia.

-Horse needs room in front of their feet to "surf" for balance, which the
manger-style trailers foil and cause such stress that the horses sometimes
climb right up into them.

Hi All,

What is the latest thoughts on trailering horses?
Straight load, slant load, reverse load, reverse
slant, open stock - tied, not tied. I'm thinking that
the suspension on the trailer has as much to do
with horse comfort as anything.

Experiences, input are welcome, especially regarding
having your horse arrive at a ride in good shape and
ready to go after 300-500 miles or more, some of
which is paved, but somewhat rough road. We're
considering a new, high quality trailer (read $$$$$)
with divided open stock sections. However, adding
slant horse dividers is an option as well if there is a
compelling reason to do so. Does it just depend on
the horse? Or is there more? Thanks in advance,
