It's not just a southern thang, T-Man. My Kansas horses love watermelon too. Gave some to my mare at a CTR this weekend. I've heard of people using watermelon to administer e=lytes, LOL.. hide it in the melon.
 
My horse Star embarrassed me after our first 50. I was talking to someone and holding him on the lead and not paying much attention to him. He reached over my shoulder and grabbed watermelon right out of the hands of the lady I was talking to!  I was so embarrassed, but she thought he was cute, LOL.
